Types of Accelerated Nursing Programs
There are two types of accelerated nursing programs to obtain your BSN or MSN. Let’s review the prerequisites for both programs.
Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
In order to become a registered nurse, you need a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program accepts students who have Bachelor’s degrees from an accredited school in the United States [1]. The field of study does not necessarily have to be related to science. Therefore, finance, literature, mathematics, and other degrees will be accepted into the accelerated program. - Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Completion of science prerequisite courses with an average of “C” or better
- Personal interview
- Active CNA certification or LPN licensure

Accelerated Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
If you decide to pursue advanced practice registered nursing, you must have a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The accelerated MSN pathway, sometimes known as direct-entry MSN, is available to those with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Also, this is an attractive option for people interested in pursuing a high administrative position in a health care setting.
These roles involve business operations, policy-making, and improving health care systems. Otherwise, typical nursing positions that require an MSN include: Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Midwife, and more.
Similar to BSN admissions, precious science coursework must be completed. The typical length of the program is 3 years. Simultaneously, specific certifications may be required in the case of pursuing a nursing specialty. The full list of applicant requirements are:
- Transcripts of current bachelor’s or master’s degree
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Completion of prerequisite courses, including 12 units of science with a “B” or better
- Three written recommendations
- A resume or other summary/statement of work experience
- An interview with the admissions officer
